Water supply is the first factor to consider when choosing a pump for outdoor use. Drawing water from ponds or rivers requires a submersible pump and centrifugal & turbine pumps are suitable for water supplies from the mains.

Displacement pumps work like a piston and similar to old style hand operated pumps with a lever. These are useful only for highly viscous liquids such as fertilizer mixed with the irrigation water.


Pressure and water flow rate are the next points to consider. It is  important to remember that the pressure will decrease when the water flow increases. A drip irrigation system can be attached to a lower pressure pump, spray systems require more pressure while rotary irrigation systems need the highest pressure.


The required flow rate for any irrigation system is the sum of each required flow rate in the system’s sprinkler heads. Usually, the higher the flow rate, the greater the energy needed to power the pumping system.


Irrigation pumps can be powered from mains electricity, diesel, petrol, and even solar energy. Electric pumps are usually the most energy efficient while the diesel or petrol-powered pumps have only half the energy efficiency of electricity.

Solar powered pumps work on the same basis as electric pumps but with the sun as the energy source rather than a socket. These pumps are useful for isolated properties.
